Arrested for Cottaging
Cottaging was and is illegal, and many men have been arrested for it. The police often used an 'Agent Provocateur', officers pretending to be cottagers, to trap gay men. The police would regularly purge infamous cottages and arrest several men in one evenings work.
Arrested men were often subjected to large fines or short prison sentences, and local papers would often print their names, outing many married men.
Many gay men asked the question, 'why were the police so intensely policing a such minor offence?', when serious crime rates were often so high !
