The scene in the late 70s and early 80s

1980

“In the late seventies, early eighties, there was no gay club as such in the centre of Birmingham. The Nightingale was in Witton Lane in Aston, and was a very small club - two floors, downstairs a little bar and restaurant and upstairs a tiny disco. The Grosvenor Hotel on Hagley Road ran a club, other than that the only disco was organised at the Lesbian and Gay Community Centre, and later at the Matador Pub.” Lyn never went to the original Gay Centre, but did go to the Nightingale in Aston, sometimes missing the last train at 2.15 a.m. by minutes and being stuck at New St station till 6.00 a.m.
